Look for a system’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which measures its cooling energy efficiency. The higher the SEER, the greater the level of efficiency. You can find systems ranging from 13 SEER to 23 SEER. Heat pumps not only cool your home in the summer, they also can heat it in the winter. Heating efficiency for air-source electric heat pumps is indicated by the Heating Season Performance Factor (HSPF), which is the ratio of the seasonal heating output in Btu divided by the seasonal power consumption in watts. The higher the HSPF, the greater the level of efficiency. Cooling efficiency is indicated by SEER.
