Central Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps

Today’s central air conditioning systems are more energy efficient than ever. In fact, the minimum efficiency of systems manufactured today is 30 percent more than those manufactured just three years ago.

Look for a system’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which measures its cooling energy efficiency. The higher the SEER, the greater the level of efficiency. You can find systems ranging from 13 SEER to 23 SEER. Since sizing and proper installation of a central air conditioning system are critical to energy efficiency and optimizing your comfort, it is important to hire a qualified technician and be armed with a quality installation checklist to review with your equipment installer.

Heat pumps not only cool your home in the summer, they also can heat it in the winter. Heating efficiency for air-source electric heat pumps is indicated by the Heating Season Performance Factor (HSPF), which is the ratio of the seasonal heating output in Btu divided by the seasonal power consumption in watts. The higher the HSPF, the greater the level of efficiency. Cooling efficiency is indicated by SEER.
